We Indians have progressed a lot and we’re celebrating our 61th Independence Day. But I really don’t know how we can celebrate when 220 Million people are below the poverty line. And I wonder what the BLOODY HELL are these tax men doing with all the income taxes, and service taxes we pay.
Every fourth person around me is officially poor – and I don’t know any of them. In contrast, every twenty-fifth Indian around me uses the Web. I know plenty of those Indians. Why am I so detached from an entire one-fourth of my country?
Economic liberalization since the early 1990s has created a 300 million-strong middle class and it led to an average annual economic growth of 8.6 percent over the last four years, but millions of the country’s poor remain untouched by the boom. majority of those working and living under “miserable conditions” were lower castes, tribal people and Muslims and the most disadvantaged of these were women, migrant workers and children.
Since Indian independence in 1947 numerous political parties came into being in India with the intention of serving the nation, the people, the masses. But what actually happened is that they served themselves. Politics is the way of life for a large number of politicians in India when compared to other countries of the world. Every political party comes up with the support of poor innocent citizens who still believe that things would change with the new party. That change is yet to come.
Giving and accepting bribes are against the law in India. But the fact remains that not a single job gets gone there without bribery. Corruption is what breeds the politicians. Both go almost hand in hand. The politicians accept these bribes in the name of their political parties. Every now and then media would come up with news of politicians accepting bribes, involved in scams etc. But they never seem to get convicted. Guess they are above law too.
There was a time when almost all the leaders used to work together for the betterment of the society. There were a lot of them who laid down their lives so that the future generations could live in peace. There used to be a time when politicians used to live in utter poverty as they dint have a means of livelihood. But as time changed politicians also changed. Now you could get to see our so called “people’s representatives” moving around in imported cars, violating rules, acquiring property, involving themselves in scams and what not!
You get to see the sad state of affairs in many of the government offices where the employees are non-cooperative and don’t have the time for you. You can get things done if you bribe them or otherwise you should be there with a politician’s recommendation. And all these employees would belong to various trade unions of political parties who protect them.
Now too many people in India would be working for various political parties rather than for any organizations. Why? Is it out of love for one’s own country? Or for the betterment of the society? Guess not! It is a means of livelihood for many of them. Now it is difficult to name corrupt politicians as they are in growing numbers. Each and every one of us would have come across one! There are a few of them who are unstained or neat politicians. But then they alone can’t run the show! And majority always wins!
